WordPress Theme Review: Titan, by The Theme Foundry

by Lawrence on February 11, 2010

Last November, my wife came to me and requested that she be able to update her business website by herself.

At that point, her website was based on static HTML and required frequent updates as classes filled and schedules changed.

My wife is not technophobic, but she’s not a computer person and I knew trying to teach her HTML would be a path of pain and desolation.

[smartads]

It was at that point I decided to look for something else to host her website and eventually settled on WordPress after having kicked the tires on things like Drupal and other CMSs.

The content of the new website would basically just be a port of the existing site initially, but what I really needed help with was the theme.

I needed one that both looked good and would be easy enough to change in order for it to reflect our already established corporate look. After trying out dozens of themes and spending far too much time poking around in stylesheets, we happily settled on Titan from Jestro (now The Theme Foundry.)

What sold me on Titan was the utter ease of tweaking it to look exactly the way my wife wanted. Keep in mind that I was learning CSS as I went and it only took about an hour to get things where we wanted them enough so we felt comfortable putting the new page in production.

We’ve continued the tinkering since the site went live at the end of December 2009, but the majority of the tinkering has been on the plugin side of things.

While Titan does have many good points, my recommendation comes with caveats: it has very little room for advertising space if that’s what you’re looking for (we weren’t) and putting any Widgets in the sidebar seems to break it.

A definite recommendation from me as a quick place to begin if you’re starting out.

It’s well-deserved praise for Titan. It allowed us to easily do everything we wanted to do with my wife’s website.
