Given my digestive issues I avoid most fast food as much as I can.
The onions on McDonalds hamburgers make for long nights on the can and the same goes for the sesame seed buns at Burger King. KFC tends to be passible, but it’s something I really have to be in the mood for.
Just recently, however, a Five Guys opened relatively near to us and I have to say that it’s completely dethroned Wendy’s as my favorite fast food place. Best of all, in the number of times we’ve eaten there I’ve managed to remain completely asymptomatic.
They serve exactly what their name implies with the only frills being unlimited drink refills and a wide variety of toppings for the burgers - I keep it simple with just ketchup and pickles.
One thing to note is that their normal burgers are actually double-patties – if you want a single-patty burger you’ll want to order the small burger.
Their fries aren’t fancy, but are especially tasty as they’re handcut and fried in peanut oil. The portions on their fries are so big that it’s practically impossible not to get stuffed from eating just a regular – ordering a large is just suicidal from a carbohydrate point of view.
Definitely worth a visit if you’ve never been and are near one.
One note: don’t go near one if you’ve got a nut or peanut allergy in your family. Everything’s cooked in peanut oil and they hand out free shelled peanuts to snack on while you wait – so folks with allergies be warned.
